Marc Haegeman’s “For Ballet Lovers Only”
Marc Haegeman is perhaps best known as a professional photographer, particularly of Russian companies. However, his original site, For Ballet Lovers Only, which got going in 1999, covers a much broader range of content, including reviews, interviews and in-depth features. It has not been updated in the last few years, and Marc currently seems to be running a new, ballet images only, site at www.forballetloversonly.com and his own general photography site at www.marchaegeman.com
Two areas I’d highlight on “For Ballet Lovers Only”:
Marc’s photo galleries are always worth a good gander. Newer galleries are at www.forballetloversonly.com.
Perhaps more surprisingly, while I was exploring the old site I discovered a stunning series of pages by Doug Fullington discussing the Kirov’s important 1999 reconstruction of The Sleeping Beauty:
The Kirov’s reconstructed Sleeping Beauty
The link leads to the first page of six, linked together at the bottom of each page. Calling it an in-depth exploration of a ballet classic does not even begin to do the analysis justice.
Fullington is a well-known dance historian and musicologist, as well as the foremost authority on Russian Stepanov choreographic notation. You would be hard-pressed to find anyone more knowledgeable about 19th-century ballet, and it’s fantastic that such information is available for us all.
Anyway, please do take some time to explore Marc Haegeman’s sites.
For the long term, here is a link to the site as indexed by the Internet Archive WayBack Machine.
